Those Who Mourn
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted
Matthew 5:4 (RSV)
This is the second Beatitude. First of all, this is not referring to ungodly mourning, which leads to despair and death. The mourning of the world is prideful, nigh worshiping the evil of the world by thinking it to be so powerful. It is referring mourning that does not harbor any regret, is the spur of continual conversion, and is the next step after becoming poor in spirit. That is godly mourning, or holy mourning.
We sorrow for our own sin.
We sorrow for the pain of others.
We sorrow for the state of creation.
But in all of these sorrows…
We are waiting for our redemption.
We are waiting for God’s plan to come to fruition.
We are waiting for creation to begin anew.
And so I ask you to be stubborn and hope for something, unlike the rest of the world.
